Concluding remarks + future plans

Resources and links

Remarks:

  • when defining variable names in LaTeX format (e.g. $\nu$), make sure they don’t coincide with Python commands (e.g. \n). In this case, use double backslash to override it, so it can by compiled in LaTeX format (e.g. $\\nu$). (It should work if you use \\ everywhere)

  • when writing a block of code in the .py files, be consistent at the beginning of a new row: use either tabs or spaces (don’t mix!)

Location

The meeting will take place at the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NIGGG-BAS). The room is 101, located on the first floor just above the entrance of the building.

It is approximately half way between the airport and the city centre.

Dinner on 24-th (Wednesday)

Dinner will be at the Stariya Chinar (Old Chinar - Shipchenski) restaurant Old Cninar - Shipchenski from 7:00 PM. This is about 15 min. walk from the meeting venue in the direction of the city centre.

Make sure you do not go to the restaurant with the same name in the city centre.

Accommodation

If you prefer to stay close to the meeting venue, you can book these two hotels, which are 5 min walk from NIGGG-BAS:

Hotel of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

Family Hotel 007

Otherwise, book a hotel at the city centre; a large variety of options are available on Booking.com.

Transport

You will arrive at Sofia Airport, which has Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

If you arrive at Terminal 2, the best way to get to the city centre is by the Metro.

If you arrive at Terminal 1, you can get bus line 84 to the city centre. Alternatively, you can get a shuttle bus to Terminal 2, and the Metro from there.

For public transport you pay by tapping-in a debit or credit card to the bottom of a device available in all vehicles. The Metro is an exception, where you tap-in at the entry gates. A single 30-min ride costs 0.80 Euro, and the daily cap is 2 Euro (must use the same card all the time).

If you arrive after 11:30 PM or before 5 AM, you can use night-bus line N4, but will be better-off getting a taxi. Also, if you travel directly from the airport to the meeting venue, get a taxi. It is close, and will cost you about 10 Euro. Never accept the invitation of drivers offering you a ride in the arrivals area, or outside the terminal. Instead, locate the official taxi stand next to the terminal, with well- and uniformly-designated cars and use them.

For travel between the city centre and the meeting venue, it is best to use tram lines 20 or 21, which stop right across the street from NIGGG-BAS. Takes 30-40 min.

Currency

Euro

Note: The price tags are still both in Euro and the old currency, the Lev (BGN). This is a legal requirement since the Euro was adopted just 5 months ago, and the local residents need some reference. What you have to pay in Euro is the smaller number on the price tag (1.95 times smaller than the Lev price).
