Project description

ViPr is an NWO-VIDI project on Virtual Prototyping of Particulate Processes – Design and Optimisation via Multiscale Modelling and Rapid Prototyping. Starting in 2019, it has employed two PhD students (Timo Plath, Juan Alvarez), one PDEng (Julius Mbaziira) and one PostDoc (Hongyang Cheng). Together we have developed many tools to make virtual prototyping of granular materials a reality, including:

  • A population balance model for modelling particle agglomeration, growth and breakage

  • A novel framework for multiscale and particle-solid coupling

  • Moomph, a open-source software coupling two powerful numerical solvers, MercuryDPM and oomph-lib

  • An automated calibration routine to extract contact model parameters from experimental characterisation

  • OMP parallelisation of MercuryDPM

  • Rapid prototyping of a lab-scale twin-screw granulator

These techniques have been used to sucessfully model to timely applications, additive manufacturing and continuous granulation.

Workshop aims

This workshop is organized to share the outcomes of the ViPr project with a diverse audience, ensuring its impact across academia and industry:

  • Industrial Partners: Share outcomes of the project and discuss practical applications.

  • Postdocs and PhDs: Recognize their contributions and provide a platform to showcase their work.

  • ON-DEM Participants: Introduce them to the methods/findings from ViPr, inspire open-source development.
